The oak-lined Museum District is the vibrant center of Houston's arts and culture, featuring internationally recognized museums, parks, theatres and the Houston Zoo. Situated close to downtown and adjacent to the renowned Texas Medical Center and Rice University, the first neighborhoods in the area were developed in the early 1900s and were meant to be exclusive pockets. However, by the 1920s, the Museum area was at the forefront of Houston’s residential development, and the area continues to be developed today— including a mix of sprawling mansions, quaint bungalows and traditional brick homes. In 1988, the City of Houston honored the community by officially designating a large portion of it as the "Museum District." Canopies of live oaks, adventure for all who seek it and a rich lifestyle attract a variety of people to the Museum District.
